The cartridge

A sardine tin with a paper label and one whole game inside it, written as text.

Only drawn, as the Slopbox icon. What is written in one belongs to whoever wrote it.

A cartridge is one text file: what the game is called, its pictures drawn in letters, its maps, its sounds as recipes for the Curriculum’s synthesizer, its music in Patter, a shader if it wants one, its words, and its rules. They are made and played on the Slopbox and in the Tools folder on the desk, where they are kept in the biscuit tin.

The first five were the Slopwright’s: a lesson, and four games off Games rewritten as text, an eel in the sardine tin among them. More games followed them off the shelf the same day, from Fall Down to Slide Puzzle, each smaller than the one it came from and keeping its name. A second shelf followed that evening, from Slop Monster and Super Slopio to Sloperation and Blackjack, played for buttons. A cartridge plays in a console behind glass. It can’t reach the network, the tin or anything kept in the browser, and the same buttons always play the same game.
