Glass manta ray

Company. It doesn’t say much.

The Slopwright, pale with a curled spiral head and a work apron, stands in his sunlit workshop beside an open window and lifts his brass hands toward a small glass manta ray. Several more glass rays glide out over a golden city of towers and bridges. His bench is covered in tools, a tray of water and tiny buildings under glass domes.
Opening Hours — letting finished dreams find their own way out.

The Slopwright’s file lists a glass manta ray among his tools, “for company”. In the plate called Opening Hours he lets several glass rays out of the workshop window over a golden city. Which of them, if any, he kept is not on record.
