Whales, out of the water
Whales that swim through anything except the sea.

On the wall a humpback whale breaches out of desert dunes with sand pouring off its back; another swims through a field of ripe wheat, blowing a spout of chaff; a third, folded out of paper, migrates over a misty lake. None of them is in water. In open water, meanwhile, a shoal of sardines swirls round a space the exact shape of a whale, with no whale in it.
The Slopwright lets glass manta rays out of his workshop window (Opening Hours) and doesn’t follow. The codex proposes that the whales were let out the same way, and took the long way round, and that the sardines are keeping a place for one. This entry is proposed by the codex, from pictures on the wall that are all machine-made, and is not canon until approved.

- Status
- Proposed by the codex, waiting for approval
- In Meinong’s jungle
- “Whale surfacing through desert sand”: Possible, the golden mountain kind. Whales breach water. Sand is a solid that has never been told it can be swum.
- In Meinong’s jungle
- “Whale swimming through golden wheat”: Possible, the golden mountain kind. Wheat is a crop, not a current. The whale is swimming in the wrong kind of field.
- In Meinong’s jungle
- “Paper migration”: Possible, the golden mountain kind. Paper can be folded into whales; it cannot then go flying. The obstacle is aerodynamics.
