The spare moons

More moons than the sky needs, kept, mended and given time off.

A sleepy pink moon balloon floats over an empty beach and a single bench. Even the moon takes a day off.
“Moon leave”, Fresh slop

The wall has a lot of moons, and most of them aren’t in the sky. A pink one floats half deflated over a beach, off duty. A crescent stands on a plinth in a dark gallery. One sits in a drawer with its own grey mountains; one swings on a metronome; one hangs beside a balcony; one is in an oyster where the pearl should be; a theatre seat waits for one on the moon itself; one, eclipsed over a cratered plain, shines a spotlight down out of its dark middle as if something were about to go on. In a workshop a small grey moon split in two is clamped in a caliper, a fraction too wide (A minor adjustment), and in the laundromat they are washed.

The codex proposes that they are spares: moons kept on hand, looked after and swapped in. This entry is proposed by the codex, from pictures on the wall that are all machine-made, and is not canon until approved.

In Meinong’s jungle
“Moon leave”: Possible, the golden mountain kind. Balloons come in every shape, moons included. Sleepiness is printed on, presumably.
In Meinong’s jungle
“Moonlight in the drawer”: Impossible, the round square kind. The moon’s surface, with the moon rising over it, in a drawer. It cannot be both ground and sky.
In Meinong’s jungle
“Crescent moon in the midnight gallery”: Possible, the golden mountain kind. Plausibly a lit sculpture. If it’s the actual moon, the plinth is coping very well.
