Snag
A knot in the night’s thread. It glows before it throws a loose end of itself.

Where the golden thread runs through the night it tangles, the way anything long enough does, and the tangles come loose and drift. In Golden Thread a snag drifts toward the needle, glows when it is about to throw a loose end at the eye, and comes undone when a stitch lands on it; a bigger one, a knot, takes three stitches and throws two ends at once. A loose end that reaches the eye frays the thread; one stitched on the way is a note like any other.
