Loose stripes
Zebra stripes that come off, and some that were never finished.

On the wall a zebra’s stripes slip off onto the grass like ribbon. Another zebra is striped only at the front, with a reel of black ribbon lying in the grass beside it; another is flat cardboard from the middle back. A white horse walks out of a motel courtyard with its stripes trailing behind; a set of stripes comes out of the wash in the laundromat on its own; the stripes of a zebra crossing wander off across a field.
The codex proposes that stripes are put on, the way shadows are cast, and come loose the same way. Who puts them on is not on record: the reel is in the picture and the hand never is. This entry is proposed by the codex, from pictures on the wall that are all machine-made, and is not canon until approved.

- In Meinong’s jungle
- “The zebra’s unfinished stripes”: Possible, the golden mountain kind. Stripes are pigment, not ribbon, so the spool is a category slip. The half-zebra is otherwise sound.
- In Meinong’s jungle
- “Zebra stripes slip to the ground”: Possible, the golden mountain kind. Markings sliding off like loose tape: hide doesn’t work that way, though nothing here contradicts itself.
- In Meinong’s jungle
- “Wandering crosswalk stripes”: Possible, the golden mountain kind. Paint leaving the road is an adhesion failure with initiative. Nothing in it contradicts itself.
