The Snuffer

A brass cone on a long handle, the kind that puts candles out without smoke. In The Lighthouse it has climbed to the lamp room of the lighthouse and sits on the lamp, and every time the lamp comes round it goes out. It is not wicked. Its job is lights out at bedtime, and nobody told it a lighthouse does not have one. It hops, rises over whoever is in the way with its shadow under it, and comes down; when it is tired it puffs smoke rings along the floor.

Like everything else here, it was made by a machine.
