The vest hooks
A vest on every hook, by name, and one more hook than there are vests.
A batten of hooks in the staff canteen, each with a name card, each with a staff vest in the same olive as the Assistant’s and a pair of shoes underneath, except one. The memo beside them: “Vests are hung on the hooks by name. There is one more hook than there are staff. Please leave it empty. It is not empty.” Another says the Assistant has asked for a staff vest in your size.
Whose the empty hook is, is not said. It belongs to nobody the night staff will name.
