The telephones
Telephones on the wall, with cords that go further than the room and nobody on the line.

On the wall a telephone is mostly its cord. A rotary phone the size of a cottage sits on a cliff above the sea with its cord down the grass; a conch is the handset of one, over a lake; a pea tendril has grown out of a handset, and an antler is the cord of another; eggs pour out of a rotary phone; on one, the curl has moved from the cord into the handset and left the cord straight. A small red telephone has a cord that loops across the floor in coils the size of tyres to another receiver; a glass phone booth on a dry plain is pinched at the waist by its own coiled cord; two black payphone handsets hang on a yellow panel joined by a clear ribbon of water; two old telephones stand in a hallway, one of them in a mirror and in poor condition.
Nobody on the wall is ever speaking into one. The codex proposes that these are all one line, a long one, and that the cords are what it is made of. Who is at the other end is left open. This entry is proposed by the codex, from pictures on the wall that are all machine-made, and is not canon until approved.

- “Long distance”: Possible, the golden mountain kind. A phone the size of a cottage asks only for plastic and nerve. The line is another matter.
- In Meinong’s jungle
- “Endless cord, tiny phone”: Possible, the golden mountain kind. A very long phone cord is still a cord. The other receiver can wait at its far end.

- “Whisper between abandoned payphones”: Possible, the golden mountain kind. Two handsets joined by a ribbon of clear water. Water is a poor wire, but it makes a connection of a sort.

On the wall
Pieces of Fresh slop with one like it in them, grouped here by the proposal. The pictures don’t say they are the same one.
