The sky underneath

Open sky under the ground, under a frozen lake and under a pool floor.

A dry plain cracked into plates, with blue sky and white clouds showing through the cracks underneath. Dig far enough and it gets breezy.
“Sky beneath the cracked earth”, Fresh slop

Break through a floor on the wall and there is usually sky. Cracked earth opens onto blue sky and clouds; a frozen lake has clouds under the ice; a drained pool’s floor has fish-shaped holes with gulls flying below; a ballroom floor has given way onto an autumn forest; an apple tree has a round hole in it full of stars; the potholes in an empty car park go down to a galaxy. Some things grow the other way: roots in the air and apples underground, cyclamen flowering inside the soil under bare grass, birches rooted in cloud, flamingos standing on a ceiling.

A sign in the poolrooms gives the deep end’s depth as ∞ m. The codex proposes that the sky underneath is what is at the bottom. This entry is proposed by the codex, from pictures on the wall that are all machine-made, and is not canon until approved.

In Meinong’s jungle
“Sky beneath the cracked earth”: Impossible, the round square kind. The sky is above the ground by definition. Below it, it is not the sky.
In Meinong’s jungle
“Wrong exit through the pool floor”: Impossible, the round square kind. Below a pool floor is earth. Sky down there means the ground is above itself.
In Meinong’s jungle
“Clouds beneath the frozen lake”: Possible, the golden mountain kind. Cumulus need open sky to form. Under ice they have nowhere to rise to.
