On the wall an egg is never only an egg. One sits whole on a steel sheet it has cracked; in a straw nest one lies beside its twin, which is flat as a plate; a crocodile’s teeth are a row of eggs, and one is hatching; on a blue enamel table five eggs sit inside each other; a paper bag cracks like a shell and lets out a yolk; one egg in a carton of twelve is the night sky.
Eggs are the wall’s favourite container, because something is always inside. Like everything on the wall, the pictures are machine-made.

- In Meinong’s jungle
- “The egg that cracked steel”: Impossible, the round square kind. Egg against steel has one known result. Here the shell is unmarked and the plate is in pieces.
- In Meinong’s jungle
- “Paper thin egg beside its twin”: Possible, the golden mountain kind. Eggshell flattened without a crack has stopped behaving like eggshell. The twin is a proper egg about it.
