Ruler

A straight edge, wooden or steel. Used for almost everything except measuring.

Road Crossing mid-game, from above: things rolling across the open plan’s chequered floor, the glob at the edge of an acid spill with rulers and sticky notes floating on it, and a shelf of jars at the top

Rulers turn up wherever the workshop needs a straight edge to do something else. On Lamp Post two wooden rulers are the flippers, and a tilt stops them working. In Road Crossing they float on the spill and carry the glob over it, and get shorter as the levels go on: “Shorter rulers.” In Invaders the launcher rides a steel rule along the bench edge, and in Putting It Off the walls of every hole are rulers.

Not one of them is used to measure anything. That is the tape measure’s job.
