The Tallyman

Counts what is drawn, burned and eaten, on a tally stick, twice.

No game or picture shows them yet, and the codex won’t make one up.

Described, not pictured.

The Tallyman sits in the oil cellar, among the empty tins, and keeps a tally stick: a notch for every measure of oil, cup of tea and ladle of slop that comes or goes. They write to the Sardine Reserve about the count, and hear nothing back.

They want the numbers to come out the same twice. They are wary of the stock, which moves when nobody is counting, and believe that counting a thing keeps it where it is.

Like everything else here, the Tallyman was made by a machine.
