On the wall some things that are round by nature have come out with corners. A red onion cut in half has square rings; a rusted radiator gives off cube-shaped soap bubbles; a dust devil rises off the desert as a sharp-edged block; an open oyster holds a pearl that is a perfect cube; a woodpecker chips a tree trunk into neat wooden cubes.
The opposite of things gone soft: here the hard corners came from nowhere. It is one thing happening in many places, and nobody knows why. Like everything on the wall, the pictures are machine-made.

- In Meinong’s jungle
- “Square ringed red onion”: Possible, the golden mountain kind. Onions grow in rounds. This one grew in nested squares, and it is still an onion.
- In Meinong’s jungle
- “Impossible cubic pearl in oyster”: Possible, the golden mountain kind. Pearls grow round because nacre goes on in layers. This oyster layered one with corners.
